Anime News Update: A Live-Action Kiki’s Delivery Service?
Earlier this year, the controversial news of Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘official’ retirement left fans disappointed and still wanting more of their old favourites. Studio Ghibli Films such as Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle are ones that people still hold dear to this day and won’t be forgotten anytime soon. However (while completely my own opinion) one film has never seemingly generated as much gain and popularity as the token films that we all know and love.
This film being Kiki’s Delivery Service.
And as a long-time fan of this Film in particular, I am ecstatic to announce that a live-action remake is currently on track to hit Japanese Screens on March 1st 2014 (As if you couldn’t tell from the Poster above.) Being directed by Takashi Shimizu who is much famous for his work on the original japanese horror film ‘The Grudge’ and with Fuka Koshiba taking the lead role of Kiki herself, the film looks to be extremely promising. However while Studio Ghibli are in full support and approval of the live-action remake, they aren’t directly involved in any way.
This fact alone provides the basis for an uprising of sorts. As proven many times before, Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki fans as a whole are extremely passionate about anything that gets produced, so while this news may provide them with the much-needed closure of the big man’s retirement, it also may allow things within the fandom to take a bit of a sour turn. However in terms of myself, I’m going to remain completely open-minded and be grateful for the fact of my favourite Miyazaki Film getting its own live-action shot. From watching the trailer for a total of sixteen times within the past hour or so, it looks to be a somewhat faithful and exciting adaptation.
